The riad has its own hammam — a small vaulted steam room and a massage room beside it, each with room for two, and a changing room of your own. Only one booking uses it at a time, so for as long as you are in there, the whole of it is yours.
The steam room is built the old way — tadelakt laid by hand, a domed ceiling pierced with star-shaped skylights, and a heated stone bench that warms the room from below. There are no windows and very little sound — only the light falling through the roof and the heat coming up through the stone.
You are washed with savon noir, the black olive-oil soap, then scrubbed with the kessa glove until the skin is clean, and finished with rhassoul clay from the Atlas and a rinse of warm water. It is an ordinary weekly ritual in Morocco, and it leaves you loose and half-asleep.
The hammam is one ritual rather than a menu of them, and we give it as long as it takes. A massage can follow in the massage room next door — the spa card below lists them, with how long each takes. Tell us at the desk and we will set the time aside.
